Vestavia Hills City Schools

Todd Freeman, Ed.D., is the seventh superintendent of Vestavia Hills City Schools. He has served as superintendent since March 2018.

Under Freeman’s leadership, Vestavia Hills City Schools developed new strategic plan goals and renewed the system’s accreditation in 2019. He and his leadership team oversaw the implementation of a comprehensive school restructuring and rezoning plan which included the opening of three new schools: Vestavia Hills Elementary Dolly Ridge, the new campus of Louis Pizitz Middle School, and the Vestavia Hills High School Freshman Campus.

Freeman was previously superintendent of Sylacauga City Schools in east Alabama, where he led the development of a new strategic plan and extended an ad valorem tax which facilitated numerous capital improvement projects. Sylacauga City Schools also expanded its fine arts, career/technical education, and Pre-K programs during his leadership.

Freeman has worked in public education for more than 30 years. He began his career as a social studies teacher at Auburn High School and taught from 1993 to 2003. He went on to become Auburn City Schools’ Executive Director of Operations and Administrative Services and returned to Auburn High School in 2010 as its principal. 

Originally from Clay County, Alabama, Freeman holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary social science from Jacksonville State University, a master’s in secondary social science from Auburn University, and a doctorate in educational leadership from Valdosta State University.
