Annalyn's Law
VHCS is committed to maintaining safe school environments for all students. Annalyn’s Law provides guidance for Alabama schools related to safety planning, communication, and monitoring when a juvenile sex offender is enrolled in school or participates in school functions.
Annalyn’s Law was passed in March 2018 and is named in honor of Annalyn Cook, a child victim who was sexually abused by a juvenile offender in Alabama.

Annalyn’s Law requires juvenile sex offenders to submit an application to attend school property and school functions. The law also requires school personnel to meet and create an individualized safety plan when applicable.
The purpose of the safety plan is to help school personnel take appropriate steps to support student safety while following state law, district procedures, and confidentiality requirements.

Schools are required to share necessary information with appropriate school personnel and monitor the student through school enrollment and school personnel changes.
School officials also provide training to school personnel on how to take appropriate action if an increase or escalation of certain triggering behaviors is noticed.
These procedures are designed to help schools respond consistently, monitor safety concerns appropriately, and maintain a safe learning environment.
